Publications
are at the heart of a thriving breed association. We currently provide two News Letters and a Year Book for each year's membership. Our aim is to keep members up to date with what is happening, well informed on health-care and management of ducks, and aware of the background to this unique breed.

Members can advertise their birds free of charge in a small advert in the Year Book and on this website.  (Breeders' Directory). Display adverts for products associated with Indian Runners can also be placed, for a small cost,  in the newsletters and on the website.

How can one give an adequate idea to someone who has not been to one of these big European shows? Well, if you think of the Federation Show at Stafford or the Poultry Club Show at Stoneleigh, imagine something roughly five times bigger. It combines pigeons, ducks, geese, guinea fowl, turkeys and chickens with pens of wild fowl. All the cages are clean,  . . .

Ponds

The dominating feature of our garden is a 25’ diameter pond which we excavated just after we moved in. Our house adjoins some old gravel pits, now a private lake with a wonderful range of wildlife and rare wildfowl. The original purpose of the pond was to lure wildlife into the garden, a plan that met with rapid success. Before long dragonflies, grass snakes and kingfishers were taking a dip freely within view of the back door. And then came the ducks! Although I didn’t design the pond with them in mind, I found I had created quite a good duck pond, one which seems to have stood up to their attempts to destroy it fairly well. However a number of our neighbours have given up on duck-keeping because they wrecked the garden pond, so it’s worth considering some of the problems. . . .

Egg production

Julian Burrell’s article called “Producing Layers from Show Strains” (IRDA Newsletter, Spring 2001) hits, as I see it, the nail on the head. Nowadays hardly a subject concerning Indian Runners is worthier of notice. He stated: “Many people each year buy Indian Runners, expecting them to lay a large number of eggs only to be disappointed.” And he rightly continued: “The problem is over breeding for exhibition”. Admittedly, some Runner-enthusiasts could be taken aback by such an assessment of their ducks’ reputation. However, let me show you that J. Burrell had a point. . . . .
The first newsletter was published in December 2000 at the Association's inception and was available to prospective members. It contained articles about the founder secretary in 1907, historical research by Professor Dr Rudolph, cartoon images of Runners from the 1920s and show results from three of the major Autumn shows in 2000
